Marking a remarkable day in the Sri Lankan elephant saga, two baby elephants had seen the light at Elephant Orphanage Pinnawala on 31st August 2021, for the first time ever since the organisation began.
Surangi, is a captive elephant who was born in 1997. She was brought under the care of Elephant Orphanage Pinnawala on 03rd of December 1997, when she was not even one year old. Since then, Surangi lives a peaceful life at the Elephant Orphanage, Pinnawala nurtured with love and care by our staff. On the verge of her youth, she gave birth for the first time to a baby elephant named “Kanaka”. Kanaka is now a playful young elephant, adding splendour to the herd of elephants at Pinnawala.
As years lapsed, Surangi conceived for the second time almost two years back. Since then, she was given special attention and care by our team of veterinarians including the staff in the animal section. At the dawn of the 31st of August 2021, specifically at 4.30 am. Surangi gave birth to her
second calf. At about 10.00 am Surangi once again delivered the second of her twin calves, adding to the joy of giving birth to a baby elephant a few hours back. Both of these baby elephants are males and are blessed with good health. Surangi is a female elephant, who is 24 years of age at present.
Pandu,is the elephant who has fathered these two calves and now he is 17 years old . In fact, after being born in Vavuniya, Settikulam Pandu joined the herd at elephant orphanage, Pinnawala on 26th of September, 2004.
