Sumana was found abandoned in the forest area of Maradankadawala –Thirappaane and was brought to the elephant orphanage on the 19th of May 1997. He was about 3 ½ years when found and was named “Sumana” with auspices. Sumana as time went by grew up to be a magnificent tusker bringing fortune to the Orphanage. In Asian elephants only males bear tusk and within the Sri Lankan subspecies Elephas Maximus Maximus only 5% has tusks. He is now the most charismatic attraction to the tourists and a well-loved resident amongst the workers.
